What Is Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that rebuilds or augments areas of the jaw where bone has been lost or is insufficient to support a dental implant. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding jawbone begins to deteriorate almost immediately — a process called resorption. Without the stimulation provided by a tooth root, the bone gradually shrinks in both height and width. Over time, this bone loss can make implant placement impossible using conventional techniques, and can even alter the shape of the face and jaw.
Bone grafting reverses this process by introducing graft material into the deficient area, stimulating the body's natural healing response and encouraging new bone cells to grow. Once the graft has matured and integrated — a process that typically takes three to six months — the site is ready to receive a dental implant with the strength and stability needed for long-term success. Who Needs a Bone Graft?

Types of Graft Material
What Is Used to Rebuild the Bone?

Autograft (Your Own Bone)
Bone harvested from the patient's own body — typically from the chin, jaw, or hip — is considered the gold standard because it contains living bone cells and natural growth factors. It integrates most predictably but requires a second surgical site.
Allograft (Donor Bone)
Processed bone from a human donor, obtained from a certified bone bank. Allografts are rigorously screened and sterilized for safety. They eliminate the need for a donor site and are one of the most commonly used graft materials in implant dentistry.
Xenograft (Animal-Derived Bone)
Most commonly derived from bovine (cow) sources, xenografts are processed to remove all organic material, leaving only the mineral scaffold. They serve as an excellent framework that the body gradually replaces with its own bone over time.
Alloplast (Synthetic Bone)
Man-made materials — including hydroxyapatite, calcium phosphate, and bioactive glass — that mimic the mineral composition of natural bone. They are an excellent option for patients who prefer to avoid human or animal-derived products.

The Process
What to Expect
Your bone grafting journey begins with a comprehensive evaluation including cone beam CT (3D) imaging to precisely measure the amount of bone available, identify the extent of the deficiency, and plan the most appropriate grafting approach. This imaging is essential — it allows Dr. Kampf to design a surgical plan that maximizes bone volume at the implant site while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues.
The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia, with IV sedation available for patients who prefer to be relaxed and unaware during surgery. A small incision is made in the gum to expose the underlying bone, and the graft material is carefully placed and secured within the defect. In many cases, a membrane — a thin barrier made of collagen or titanium — is placed over the graft to protect it and guide bone growth. The gum tissue is then closed over the site with sutures.
Healing varies depending on the size of the graft. Smaller socket preservation grafts may be ready for implant placement in as little as three to four months. Larger block grafts or sinus augmentations may require six to nine months of healing before the bone is mature enough to support an implant. During this healing period, our team monitors your progress with follow-up imaging and clinic visits to confirm integration is proceeding as planned.
Recovery
After the Procedure
Most patients experience mild to moderate soreness and swelling in the first three to five days following bone grafting, which is well managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief and cold compresses. A soft diet is recommended for the first week, and strenuous physical activity should be avoided for several days. It is important not to disturb the graft site — avoid smoking, using straws, or pressing on the area with your tongue or finger.

A follow-up visit is typically scheduled one to two weeks after surgery to check healing, remove sutures if needed, and answer any questions. Cone beam CT imaging will be taken at the appropriate interval to confirm the graft has matured before implant placement is scheduled.
