Overview

About This Procedure

A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the molars and premolars. It is one of the most common procedures performed prior to placing dental implants in the upper jaw, where bone volume is often insufficient due to the proximity of the maxillary sinus — a large air-filled cavity located just above the back teeth.

When teeth in the upper back jaw have been missing for some time, the bone that once supported them deteriorates, and the sinus cavity can expand downward into the space previously occupied by the tooth roots. This leaves too little bone height to safely anchor an implant. A sinus lift resolves this by grafting new bone material into the sinus floor, creating a stable foundation for implant placement.

The Process

What to Expect

The procedure begins with detailed 3D cone beam CT imaging to precisely measure available bone height and map the anatomy of your sinus. During the procedure, a small window is made in the lateral wall of the sinus, and the sinus membrane is gently lifted upward. Bone graft material — which may be your own bone, donor bone, or a synthetic substitute — is then carefully packed into the space created beneath the elevated membrane.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, with sedation available for patient comfort. Healing time typically ranges from four to nine months, after which the grafted bone is ready to support implant placement. Some patients with adequate existing bone may be able to have implants placed simultaneously at the time of the sinus lift. Our surgeons will determine the best approach based on your individual anatomy and treatment goals.

Outcomes

Results & Long-Term Care

Sinus lift procedures have a high success rate and have made implant dentistry possible for countless patients who were previously told they lacked sufficient bone. With proper healing and oral hygiene, the grafted bone integrates fully and provides a durable platform for implants that can last a lifetime. Patients are advised to avoid blowing their nose forcefully, sneezing with their mouth closed, or using straws during the early healing phase to protect the sinus membrane while it heals.
