Wisdom teeth — also called third molars — are the last teeth to develop, typically emerging between the ages of 17 and 25. Because the modern jaw often lacks sufficient space to accommodate them, wisdom teeth frequently become impacted, meaning they are unable to fully erupt through the gum line. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a range of problems including pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, cyst formation, and crowding of the existing dentition.
Even wisdom teeth that have partially erupted can be difficult to clean and are prone to decay and gum disease. The Process
What to Expect
Before surgery, cone beam CT imaging is obtained to map the exact position of each wisdom tooth and its relationship to critical structures such as the inferior alveolar nerve and the maxillary sinuses. This detailed evaluation ensures that the surgical approach is planned with maximum safety and efficiency.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, with IV sedation available for patients who prefer to be fully relaxed and unaware during the surgery. The surgeon makes a small incision in the gum if necessary, carefully sections the tooth if needed for easier removal, and extracts it with minimal impact to the surrounding bone and tissue. Most patients are able to return home the same day and resume normal activities within a few days. Soreness, swelling, and minor bleeding are normal in the first 48 to 72 hours and are manageable with prescribed medications and cold compresses.

The vast majority of wisdom tooth extractions heal without complication. Following post-operative instructions carefully — including keeping the area clean, avoiding straws, smoking, and hard foods — greatly reduces the risk of dry socket and promotes faster healing.
