Why Sedation?

Making Dental Surgery More Comfortable

Dental anxiety is more common than most people realize — and it should never be a barrier to receiving the care you need. At NorthStar Implant Dentistry, we take patient comfort seriously and offer a range of sedation options to ensure that every procedure, from a simple extraction to complex implant surgery, can be performed in a calm, relaxed, and pain-free environment.

Sedation is recommended for patients who experience dental anxiety or fear, patients undergoing lengthy or complex surgical procedures, patients with a strong gag reflex, patients who have had difficult experiences with dental care in the past, and patients who simply prefer to be relaxed and unaware during their treatment. Our team will discuss your options, your medical history, and your preferences during your consultation to determine the most appropriate level of sedation for your procedure.

Your Options

Sedation Levels We Offer

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered by injection at the surgical site, completely numbing the area being treated. It is used in all surgical procedures at NorthStar and ensures you feel no pain during the operation. Patients remain fully awake and alert. For patients undergoing straightforward procedures without significant anxiety, local anesthesia alone may be sufficient.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide — commonly known as laughing gas — is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. It produces a pleasant sense of relaxation and mild euphoria within minutes, reducing anxiety while keeping you conscious and cooperative. The effects wear off almost immediately after the mask is removed, allowing most patients to drive themselves home after their appointment.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescription medication — typically a benzodiazepine such as triazolam or diazepam — approximately one hour before your procedure. The medication produces a moderate level of relaxation and drowsiness, and many patients have little memory of the procedure afterward. A responsible adult must accompany you to and from your appointment when oral sedation is used.

IV Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation delivers sedative medication directly into the bloodstream through a small catheter placed in the arm. It produces a deep state of relaxation in which most patients have little to no awareness or memory of the procedure — sometimes described as being "asleep" even though you are technically conscious and breathing on your own. IV sedation is ideal for complex surgeries, highly anxious patients, and full-arch procedures. A responsible adult must drive you home afterward.

Safety

Our Commitment to Your Safety

Patient safety is our highest priority during every sedation procedure. All sedation at NorthStar is administered and monitored by trained professionals following established protocols and guidelines. Throughout your procedure, your vital signs — including blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate — are continuously monitored using state-of-the-art equipment. Emergency reversal agents, oxygen, and resuscitation equipment are always immediately available.

Prior to any sedation, a thorough review of your medical history, current medications, and allergies is conducted to identify any contraindications and customize your sedation plan for maximum safety and effectiveness. Our team will provide you with detailed pre-operative instructions — including fasting guidelines and medication adjustments — to ensure your procedure proceeds safely. Your comfort and safety are never compromised.
